Tuscia and the Thermal Waters

The Thermal Waters - The presence of the two volcanic systems of Bolsena Lake and Vico Lake and, further south the one of Bracciano Lake, makes the Tuscia one of the richest thermal water springs area. A well-known patrimony that dates way back when, during the 1st century bc the consul Cassio Longino Ravilla joined up with a single road the 14 thermal establishments built after the Roman conquest of Southern Etruria.
The thermal district of Viterbo is undoubtedly one of the most important in Italy. It was already famous during the era of Pope Gregory IX (1235) who went to Viterbo to cure his "male della pietra" (calculosis). The thermal baths of Viterbo are also cited many times in Dante's Divina Commedia.
The curative effect of these waters was so appreciated by Pope Niccolo v, founder of the Vatican Library, that he ordered a building to be erected where he could comfortably spent his stay. From that moment the complex was named Terme Dei Papi (Papal Thermal Baths).
Apart from its artistic history the main attraction of the baths of Viterbo today are the water and mud baths. These natural and efficacious remedies help cure and prevent cronic infections of the respiratory apparatus and of the osteo-articular apparatus, they are good for skin diseases or simply for pleasurable and relaxing beauty treatments.
Other thermal springs are at Orte and Musignano (Canino). In Viterbo there are also Spas known as "Salus".
